Description

Dropbox lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere… store it on one computer and share them on all of your devices.  Check out a great video that explains Dropbox from their website.  Users start out with a 2Gb free account there is a fee for additional storage.

The help section gives information on how to setup a shared folder.  One thing to remember when sharing your folders is those you share with have the capability to:

  • add/delete files from the folder
  • invite other people into the folder
  • open and edit files within the folder (this could create conflicting files)

Description

Diigo comes in two varieties:

  1. The Diigo website is a highlighter, collector and storage location of bookmarks and sites to come back to later from any location.
  2. The Diigo app is your library of stored sites.

What can Diigo do?  Check out this demo video to answer that question:

Diigo differs from Pocket in that it is a bookmarking site for URL’s – you have to add the URL in Diigo – whereas with Pocket the link is added automatically through twitter

Exercise 6: Using Diigo

  1. Goto the Diigo website and create an account – under join Diigo
  2. Once the account is setup – login to Diigo
  3. On the left hand sidebar ther eis a blue button that says Add+ – select this button
    1. Add a new bookmark
      1. paste the URL from the website
      2. Give it a title
      3. Give it a description – keep in mind others will be reading this so the more detailed the better – give your opinion on the site
      4. Use tags – this will enable you to tag for different areas such as Biology 12, English 11,  Poetry…etc.
  4. Add two other bookmarks
  5. Add people to foll0w –
    1. Search their twitter name
    2. Search tags that you might use (same idea as hashtags)
    3. Search your teachers account
  6. Find three people to follow on Diigo

Definition

 Pocket (previously known as Read it Later) is a free app that allows the user to save a link to a site that they want to go back and read later.

Within the app itself, the posts can be tagged and searched for according to the tags.

For Ipad users this posting shares how to install the Pocket bookmarklet on iPad (with a video at the end).

Here is a short preview of Pocket with a few ideas for usage.

Exercise 5 : How to use Pocket

  1.  Goto your Ipad Pocket app
  2. Setup to work with Twitter
  3. Goto twitter/tweetdeck or flipboard and choose a tweet with a link attached – chose the symbol of a square with the arrow coming out of it a pop up menu appears – choose Read Later.  This will save the link to your pocket
    1. NOTE – if the article does not save to pocket and you get a window with a spinning wheel – delete your pocket app and reinstall it.  Try again.  This should fix the problem.
  4. Add three more links to your pocket site
  5. In pocket you can also “doctor up” your links by adding the following:
    1. favorite status – star
    2. tags – price tag
    3. archive an article – check mark
    4. delete a link – garbage can
      1. To perform any of the above choose the pencil icon in the top right corner and then choose a link.  This will bring up the menu
      2. You can also choose more than one link at a time to carryout the action on
  6. Make at least three links in your pocket – doctor up the links with favorite or archive or tags

Description

Bitly is a webpage or app that takes a URL and makes a Bitmark a shorter version of the link.  This product allows users to shorten, share and track links. 

The user has the choice to simply shorten the URL, or to login to their account and save the shorten link to come back to at another time.

Exercise 2: Exploring Bitly

  1.  Open the Bitly website with the link above
  2. Setup a free account – this will allow the user to store and share their bitmarks
  3. paste a URL from a website to the box in the upper left hand corner – if you cannot think of one use:  www.uvic.ca/current
  4. Copy the bitmark to use
  5. Go back to twitter, if you have signed out, sign in and send a tweet to the teacher using your bitmark

Flipboard

Flipboard is a social network aggregate that gathers information and allows the user to flip through the content like flipping through a magazine.

Exercise 4

  1. Goto your Flipboard app on your ipad
  2. Flip into the setup
  3. To remove any of the boxes press and hold until all have a small circle with an X in it. Press this circle to erase the boxes you do not want
  4. To add press the red ribbon on the upper right hand corner type in a site or hashtag you want to follow
  5. When the site appears, press the + symbol in the upper left hand corner
  6. Add three more sites/hashtags that you would like to follow

Tweetdeck

Description

Tweetdeck is a one stop shopping center for all of the tweets you are wanting to follow. 

The deck is initially setup with:

  1.  your home
  2.  me (any tweets that are publically aimed directly at you – @your_name_here)
  3. inbox – private tweets aimed at you – dm – direct message)

Users have the capability to have a larger or smaller view of the tweet channels they have chosen.    To add another column – press the “+” key in the top left hand corner and input the hashtag.  Users are also able to tweet directly from this application by pressing the top right hand button (appears as a pen and paper) and a tweet box will open.

Exercise 3: Playing with Tweetdeck

  1. Goto the tweedeck app on your ipad
  2. Sign in with your twitter account
  3. To change the view size press the little 1x button in the bottom right hand corner
  4. Check out the three columns you presently have – by swiping the ipad right-to-left
  5. Add a new column – press the “+” sign on the top left corner – either search or select your name and add an area from the dropdown list
  6. Choose 2 areas to follow and add the columns
